From education and healthcare facilities to major transportation upgrades, Florida's construction market continues to generate significant opportunities for contractors and construction professionals.

Florida's construction industry is entering another busy period, with major developments scheduled to break ground or progress through construction during the remainder of 2026 and into 2027.

Across the state, investment in public infrastructure, education, transportation and commercial facilities is creating a substantial pipeline of work. For General Contractors and specialty contractors, these projects represent opportunities to secure long-term workloads, while also highlighting the importance of having experienced construction professionals in place.

Here are some of the notable projects contributing to Florida's construction outlook.

Major Education Projects Across Central and North Florida

Education remains an important source of construction activity, with several large-scale developments planned across the state.

In Tallahassee, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Building C represents an investment of approximately $152 million, according to Florida State University. Construction was scheduled to begin in September 2026, with JE Dunn Construction appointed as Construction Manager. The development will provide new teaching laboratories, classrooms and collaborative learning environments.

Meanwhile, Orange County is preparing for several significant school construction programs.

Timber Creek High School, with a project budget of approximately $156 million, is scheduled to undergo extensive improvements between December 2026 and November 2029. Williams Company has been appointed as Construction Manager, overseeing a program that includes new educational facilities, technology upgrades and improvements to existing campus infrastructure.

Other notable developments include:

  • Orlando Gifted Academy: A $67.2 million replacement campus, with construction scheduled to begin in January 2027 under Pirtle Construction.

  • Chain of Lakes Middle School: A $66 million renovation program scheduled from February 2027 through December 2028, with T&G Constructors appointed as Construction Manager.

  • Northeast Maintenance Facility: A $53.7 million replacement facility in Orlando, with WELBRO Building Corporation appointed as Construction Manager.

Collectively, these projects demonstrate the continued importance of education and institutional construction within Florida's development pipeline.

Miami International Airport Continues Major Investment

Transportation infrastructure is another significant area of construction activity, particularly in South Florida.

At Miami International Airport, a major concourse connector project is scheduled to begin construction in December 2026, with completion anticipated in March 2029.

The project carries an estimated total cost of $102.1 million, with Lemartec-NV2A JV awarded a construction contract worth approximately $50.9 million, according to Miami-Dade County records.

The development will improve connectivity between Concourses F, G, H and J, incorporating new passenger corridors, elevators, escalators and associated infrastructure.

Beyond this project, Miami International Airport has outlined several additional construction packages within its procurement pipeline, including:

  • D60 Phase 2 expansion and apron improvements, with an estimated procurement value exceeding $1 billion.

  • Passenger loading bridge upgrades valued at approximately $118 million.

  • Central Chiller Plant improvements valued at approximately $38 million.

  • Parking garage structural repairs estimated at $36 million.

While procurement schedules remain subject to change, the scale of these planned investments highlights the continued demand for experienced construction teams capable of delivering complex aviation projects.

Highway and Infrastructure Improvements Across Florida

Florida's transportation network is also benefiting from ongoing investment, with several major road improvement programs scheduled to progress through 2026 and 2027.

In Sumter County, the SR 50 widening project carries an estimated construction cost of $65.2 million. The project involves expanding sections of the highway from two lanes to four, alongside drainage improvements, roadway infrastructure and a shared-use path.

Commercial Industrial Corp. was awarded the construction contract, with work scheduled from fall 2026 through late 2028, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

Elsewhere, the SR 50/SR 33 realignment in Groveland represents an investment of approximately $26.8 million. Awarded to C.W. Roberts Contracting, the project includes a new four-lane roadway alignment, intersection improvements and additional pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

In Tampa, further improvements are planned across the city's transportation network, including a $23.6 million program covering Tampa Street and Florida Avenue, alongside a $12.8 million improvement project along Busch Boulevard.

These developments reflect the continued importance of highway construction, civil engineering and infrastructure modernization as Florida's population and commercial activity evolve.

What Does This Mean for Florida's Construction Workforce?

With numerous major projects progressing simultaneously, workforce planning remains an important consideration for construction businesses operating across Florida.

Projects involving education, aviation and infrastructure require different technical capabilities, but they share a common need for experienced professionals who can manage budgets, coordinate subcontractors, oversee construction activities and deliver projects safely and efficiently.

For General Contractors, maintaining access to qualified talent across Estimating & Preconstruction, Project Management, Field Operations, Project Controls and Executive Leadership can play an important role in supporting project delivery.

In particular, professionals with experience managing complex institutional developments, active airport environments and large-scale infrastructure programs may find their expertise increasingly relevant as these projects progress.

For construction professionals considering their next career move, understanding where investment is taking place can also provide valuable insight into the sectors, locations and organizations likely to generate future opportunities.

Looking Ahead to 2027

Florida's construction pipeline extends well beyond the projects highlighted here.

Continued investment in transportation infrastructure, public facilities and major developments suggests that the state will remain an important market for construction activity throughout 2027 and beyond.

However, project schedules, funding arrangements and procurement timelines can change. The progression of individual developments will ultimately determine when contractors mobilize and when additional workforce requirements emerge.

For construction businesses, staying informed about upcoming developments and maintaining strong relationships with experienced industry professionals will remain important as the market evolves.
